this fledgling that hadn't yet learned to fly fell out of the tree in front of my off-leash dogs today.
the recently adopted stray immediately tried to kill and eat it, i managed to get him away from the bird but not before the bird suffered massive trauma to the neck/chest and got both its wings broken. the vet said it had two/three days left at most so we euthanized it on the spot. in retrospect, if the vet wasn't lying, i probably should have just let the dog kill it.
had me reflecting on the nature of power, as well as all the layers of risk mitigation that being in a relatively developed country brings. i'm basically permanently encased in bubble wrap compared to the vast majority of living things out there and it feels bad and good at the same time.
