The boss of Basecamp, Jason Fried, tells his employees that they are not allowing them to talk about politics at work anymore. In addition, they are abolishing multiple committees on diversity and inclusion.

When your boss forbids you to talk about politics, what does that truly mean? You are not allowed to use your pronouns? Because pronouns are pretty political in the american political environment. Can't say to your coworker that your are going to BLM rally? Can't talk about the weather because climate change is political? That you want to unionize?

The thing is, that nobody knows what tech-brained CEO might think is political and what is not, thus an employee constantly has to walk on eggshells because who knows what he will deem an offense that one can be fired for.

Techbro execs think anything that doesn't agree with them is political but that their own politics is just the natural state of things.

Reading between the lines, employees were "getting uppity" with demanding more on DEI, company policy re: social issues, and worker input in general.

Their announcement is, "what did you think this was, serf? A democracy? I am your lord and you will give me the grain". But they had to jerk themselves off by pretending that it's some careful and pragmatic philosophy rather than a reactionary reminder of the power imbalance.
