      And a related one (thematically, not chronologically), EP205 Nov 19 2019, Ames looks at the history of the word neoliberalism—who first used it, in what context. Surprise, it was coined in Italy as an alternative to fascism that had essentially the same goals but basically just looked less icky. Turns out some elites do get a bit spooked when accomplishing your political agenda relies on conjuring up lynch mobs.

      Ames was careful to emphasize that he was merely looking at the word itself and its original meaning, not claiming that today’s neoliberalism is a direct ideological descendent of the OG Italian neoliberalismo. But I mean...
