Near was an inspiration with their archival emulator work, and influenced my interest in this topic enormously (╥﹏╥)

I know of at least four unaffiliated servers who have a copy of everything posted on this site which are kept up to date through websockets. It is unclear when each of these archives began. One goes back at least 6 months

I genuinely felt sick when I first found out about this, I didn't know Near very well at all, but to see someone driven to suicide by scum like this just fucking hurts.

More recently, they were in the news for releasing a much-improved translation of Square’s 1996 Super Famicom RPG Bahamut Lagoon.

Absolute real ass good person. We need to do something about kiwifarms.

Near has been also a constant advocate for emulators to be open source and a hero in keeping these device and their content alive in a true and accurate form without hacks. They are the birth of the movement of highly accurate emulators, and have did so much work for us all.

I read the article on bsnes that Near wrote for ArsTechnica after seeing this news, and the shear depth of knowledge on display was stunning. Now what the fuck is this site that did this? Is it just an 8 chan variant?

BSNES is incredible. There was never anything like it before. It even emulate aspect of the cartridge hardware, Satellaview, coprocessors in great detail. It set a new standard for emulators that can preserve the legacy of the hardware.

There was a part of the article I read about the LLE of co-processors and it's definitely the coolest computer science thing I've ever heard of doing. Reworking binaries that you read off the chip with an electron microscope? That's fucking sci fi, and I have a lot of relevant education for that.

:jesse-wtf: yeah it would be great if someone could do a very :stalin-gun-1::stalin-gun-2:

They'll get theirs one way or the other.

Most likely scenario imo: Odds are they're eventually gonna shit out a mass shooter, as communities of sociopaths often do. One who'll make their link to the site obvious like posting their manifesto there or something, and whatever company who hosts them will sacrifice them to save face like they always do. And depending on how bad it is, other companies might refuse them service too to save themselves the bad PR.

Hopefully it'll actually be cuz of something else way funnier/dumber, but that's what my money's on atm.

Kiwifarms is hosted by Joshua Moon on a server rack in his mother’s basement. Free speech DNS providers are a dime a dozen. Cloudflare is the only major infrastructure provider that could refuse service. They are unlikely to do this without major media attention or hard evidence of child pornography.

Though cp likely exists on their servers, it is also likely that their operational security is adequate and that no one would be given access to sufficient evidence without first implicating themselves. All reports submitted to Cloudflare are forwarded to Joshua for him to take action first.

Given all of this, KiwiFarms is unlikely to be censored at all. A major media outcry could change this, but it would first have to affect the bottom line of someone wealthy enough to push that agenda.

He could still get parodied cuz of something completely unrelated, so that doesn't really change anything.

Also, no offense, but I noticed your account was created like 15 minutes ago, so that's a lil :amogus: .

This information is all available elsewhere. I am consolidating it for anyone who wants to dig more. Anyone who thinks that creating an alt for this purpose is bad practice should not partake. Do not click the links on the KF home page (currently showing a 404 with an “explanation” of Near’s death)

I wouldn't be so sure. If something really bad happens, the police will almost certainly uncover the precise identity of the hoster.

Agreed. Especially given that the server is in the US. Ideally we wouldn’t have to wait for an act of terrorism before the site comes down.
