I'm now convinced, where do I go for a branch of Firefox that doesn't show me this shit?

    go to about:config and click through the warning dialog. you have now reached the real settings.

    search for extensions.pocket.enabled and double-click it to turn it from "true" to "false" and restart firefox. pocket is now disabled forever.

    while you're at it, just turn off the whole new page shit. it's bad. nobody needs a search bar on the new tab page when the URL bar is also a search bar. Settings > Home > Firefox Home Content, uncheck everything. I personally have "New tabs" and "Homepage and new windows" set to blank page, as well.
