no one will change their mind, everyone here knows enough about politics and is invested in that identity that generally no casual conversation is going to move them. instead exchanges are just using sarcastic contempt to demand your own viewpoint be taken charitably, while dunking on the worst interpretation or slight errors of what the other side is saying.

Also Plenty of people here including myself struggle with totalizing morality. Because we possess a mature philosophical outlook, any one issue can be connected to multiple society wide issues. This can make it feel like being on the right side of a debate carries such a moral weight that disagreeing with you equivalent to a crime against humanity. no, seriously. There are still some people on this website for example who don’t get what the issue is with saying posters who make a certain common lifestyle decision are equivalent to being culpable for the Holocaust.

Arguing here only accomplishes making people mad, and then a month later when you’re in the middle of a different argument you’ll get banned because “there is a pattern” and you “were given plenty of chances”, because you made one or a few mods or maybe a few of their discord friends mad too many times.

Should debating even be allowed on this website? I don’t know, but we already recognize there are times where proper discussion is impossible and attempting to only damages the website, e.g. relitigating vegan drama, Xinjiang debates put in a containment thread, etc. What I’m saying is that I notice this toxicity permeating not just any specific topic, but practically every time people debate amongst themselves here.
