Protests everywhere because corrupt ex president got jailed and ethno-nationalistic violence and xenophobia, and general mass unemployment and extreme extreme poverty. (People are stealing flour and maize meal, like it's extremely desperate times)
Can't go to work because of it, hope I'm not fired. (Boss actually wanted me to come in, fuck that I'm not risking my life for your shitty business)
military and riot police deployed country wide
:reddit-logo: posting racist "rooftop Korean" esque memes and videos of people firing into a crowd of protestors on r/southafrica (actually the least of my concerns)
Only got that bad recently because they arrested Jacob Zuma, the corrupt ex president a few days ago. The situation is complicated because Zuma was a liberation and struggle hero, he spent 10 years on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela. Which means a lot of people are still loyal to him, because of his work in the past. Sadly after being president from 2009-2018 I think he was extremely corrupt and terrible, worst examples include building his own homestead with 20 million USD of taxpayer money, and saying that a shower can cure HIV/AIDS, in a country where 1 in 5 adults under 50 has HIV. Also Zuma is of Zulu ethnicity, which leads to the xenophobic and ethno-nationalistic attacks against others. Venda people have been the most effected recently as the current president (Cyril Ramaphosa) is Venda. There are accusations of betrayal and breaking agreed social contracts by the ANC jailing one of its own, especially such an important figure. The situation is complicated, this seems to have been the spark for such rioting. But there is also lots of xenophobic and ethno-nationalistic attacks and innocent people being harmed. And then the local chuds inflame the situation by posing like "rooftop Koreans" protecting their property. Lots of dogwhistles about"property rights"
Yeah like one of them got their galil and started firing blanks and rubber bullets at the crowd (thankfully not live ammunition). And people on social media thought it was live ammunition, so yeah... Fuck the settlers like that.
Linking to it is probably against site TOS about violent content. For anyone interested, it's the top post on r/southafrica reddit, 550 upvotes and counting
Literally had to wade through a million comments and posts about “muh business!” Before I finally found someone acknowledging any kind of material reason for the riots.
One comment was like “soon those bullets won’t be rubber.” Love the shit that can stay up just fine on :reddit-logo:
Lots of dogwhistles about property rights. It's to be expected, subreddit is extremely rich and white compared to the rest of the population of the country. See my reply to sorosfootsolider for more information

I've said it repeatedly in this site, that I very rarely wade into reddit nowadays. Only for artistlounge (which I feel I have a community obligation to) and games, and that's with a 10-ft pole.

r/southafrica seems just like a place were Afrikaner shitheads meet up. I'm not going there. Do you see any movement at the moment that could get South Africa out of the mess it is in now?

Correct decision and assessment.

Unless they can fix 30+% unemployement and massive inequality very quickly, no. All major political parties and institutions are compromised. There aren't really any large leftist movements.
CW: racism, riots, etc
Jesus, I didn't know S. Africa was that bad, stay safe.

Wow all of that sounds pretty complicated but I'm not surprised the settlers are acting this way.

Do you have video of that?

Good call. Do you think it's going to spill over into live ammunition?
6 people are already dead, and the army doesn't carry blanks, it doesn't look good

Yeah that place leans 10 degrees left on issues that don't effect them, and 90 degrees right on issues that do. Stay off there for your own sanity
