son is far more likely to be received as ball busting. it's literally the word a man uses to address the boy that resulted from busting in the boy's mom without a condom. which is what gives it its mustard and why I would single handedly try to bring it back, if I wasn't sure it would eventually result in me taking a punch to the face.
sir is still respectful on its face, even if you're doing an irony and saying it to a subordinate or a child. sir is tame as hell, even if you say it real shitty.
I've definitely used it on my kids (sir or ma'am) both ironically and sincerely.
