I mean "punk" in the DIY sense, I don't care if my games are bad or whatever, I just want to do it because I want to move away from consuming things to making things. I want to give these away for free because it's just a hobby. Been playing games since grade school, and I want to try to make something for once. I have a CS degree but I have never made anything on my own outside of school or work.

Are there any suggested pieces of open-source/FOSS software I can load up on my busted laptop to kick-start this creative endeavor? I know C/C++ and a little JAVA, so anything around there would be a good start with regard to code. I know about GIMP and BLENDER are good alternatives to MEGACORP products, but that's my end knowledge of FOSS software regarding game development.

Do any of you have suggestions I should add to my list?

Godot is the number one foss engine. The YouTube channel gamesfromscratch has a huge playlist for game frameworks, engines, and code stuff that you might want to check out if you're looking for something a little more programmy. For java you might want to check out Minecraft modding, the scene is very big and has lots of helpful people.

Thanks! Another user suggested Godot as well, so maybe I'm thinking I'll start there.

I was thinking about it that as well because Minecraft is primarily Java, but I have zero interest in a game like that. Even at its zenith of popularity it never seems to appeal to me, I'm not much of a builder game kind of person.
