In fairness they dlcs do take a ton of effort to produce: tons of real recordings with the actual trains, very detailed modeling, significant research into the trains and generally interviews with engineers for the trains.

The YouTube channel gamesfromscratch has a huge playlist for game frameworks, engines, and code stuff that you might want to check out if you're looking for something a little more programmy. For java you might want to check out Minecraft modding, the scene is very big and has lots of helpful people.

Not really tbh. I think there are similar ones by other companies but that is the name brand. Buy the contractor grade version from whatever manufacturer's website if you can, they're usually more expensive but the lowes/home depot versions are built way worse.
