This has always been my concern, it's the same trap the Soviets were stuck in by pursuing socialism in one state. They're competing with capitalist nations on capitalist terms and therefore need the luxury goods and consumerist lifestyle to keep citizens happy and willing to work on the national project, but at the same time these are corrupting influences that change the class characteristic of the future generations being raised under them. idk I'm just some internet weirdo
In their “David vs. Goliath” worldview, heroism is characterized by evanescense or futility (Rosa Luxemburg, Anarchist Catalonia, Leon Trotsky, Rojava, CHAZ in Seattle, Bernie Sanders, the Communist Party of the Philippines), whereas victory and longevity are in themselves proof that principles were betrayed and sadism is the rule (Joseph Stalin, Kim Il-sung, Deng Xiaoping, Nicolás Maduro, Xi Jinping).
That line's always such a banger. I'm in no way trying to criticize China as pursuing socialism in "the wrong way." It's more from a place of concern for their long term success,. The Soviet Union was doing great until it wasn't. We often talk about the difference between Khrushchev and Deng being that Deng's reforms were successful and the USSR collapsed, but that doesn't mean it will be a success forever.
The level of materialist rot capitalism generates in people fills me with despair. Will these new bougie types willingly give up their parasitic wealth? They haven't in the West or in any other developing country. In fact, I fear they will wholeheartedly go along with Western agencies to topple the CPC instead (if they can't bring them down from within).
