“Our guy James [a pseudonym] spotted them. He hit them with a spotlight, and told them, ‘Remove yourselves, or die.’ And they ran like jackrabbits. I credit him for potentially saving our lives that night,” Penny Logue tells me. “It was a literal wake-up call.”

    It can be overwhelming to think that it's solely on LGBT+ folks to organize self-defense. There is quite a large historical precedent for black Americans to be at the forefront in defending communities as well. There are a lot of comrades out there.
