Before the Internet and TVs and phones and telegraphs, there were two options: Do something or watch something. Boredom had to be filled somehow, so in Ye Olden Days humans would get drunk or do other drugs to pass the time. Play games with your friends, write songs and make music, and my favorite activity of old: watching terrible things happen. Older WTYP disasters involve a lot of bored people watching horrific events with great interest. I'm reminded of the popular beheadings, where people would go for a picnic to watch someone's head get cut off, or the times where people would watch battles.
Today we continue this grisly tradition via LiveLeak and :sicko-yes:
greeks just oiled themselves up and did some good ole naked wrestling
some of these sports had strict rules to avoid injury, whereas some of the olympic ones were super brutal
i lived in an area that was super low tech for a bit and mostly me and the other kids just made up games to play all the time. usually stuff with soccer balls and sticks. there was a river nearby that was super clear and we would try to catch fish with our bare hands as a game
also theres a lot of dance competitions and special holidays that are respected in czechia as things we used to do, but mostly its just time to play dress up. czechcon, if you will. the poles have a similar thing and tbh their dresses are better. i hate most ethnic czech dresses lmfao. too poofy! also the little vests the guys wear make them look like dancing monkeys. but there would be certain dresses for certain occasions and so on. and you would have to stitch them all too. we have an old one that was hand stitched by some ancestor, we got it sealed and framed.
tbh i feel like europeans in general got smashed in the 'cool traditional dress' olympics. the indians have the sari for example, which looks cool as fuck. all the europeans got are sexy plaid skirts and the creepy shit the belgians do
