      It's one of those paintings that had a lot of history behind it. Goya was a recluse in his old age who painted on the walls of his house, including this picture, so the madness in Saturn's eyes is a reflection of his own. There are technically better versions of this scene, but this one resonates with a lot of people because it is a little more personal, it wasn't painted to show off, Goya never expected anyone to ever see it. This is something he did, for himself, probably walked past it on the way to his kitchen every day. I think that's one of the reasons why it is so unsettling.

        It's not actually a painting of Saturn devouring his son, that's an interpretation, no one really knows what the painting is actually about and Goya didn't actually label his paintings.

      Other depictions are of Saturn with an angry face or ambivalently consuming his children. This one kinda makes it look like Saturn is not having a good time.
