I had a comp sci professor with a great anecdote to this effect. He once got hired at a job whose role was pretty much producing a daily report. The guy before him used to run around like mad getting all the data together and compiling it for the report, often working late to do so. My professor took one look at the report, wrote up a Unix shell script that would automatically compile it. So his work day was, come in, run the shell script, spend the rest of the day reading sports news, hand in report at the end of the day.
