I've been meaning to switch for a while now as it somehow gets more and more unusable. The new desktop update is the last straw for me. But I'm not as up-to-date on tech stuff as I once was. Assume I'm basically tech-illiterate. Any suggestions?

Nextcloud. It also supports calendar and contact syncing which makes it a great replacement for the Google ecosystem. If you use a managed provider, it's really no more complicated than Google drive.
