Louis XIII started wearing them to cover up his baldness, and Charles II brought them back to England after his exile because he was going grey. A lot of people were happy to adopt them because it helped cover up syphilitic baldness and sores.

Was there a specific historical reason for this style, though? Was it just more expensive to make and denoted wealth?

yes but also some courts did dress codes because centralized monarchs liked distracting the nobility & eating their surplus income on non-rebellious things like parties, gambling, and clothes. it could also serve ideological goals like making the country seem more 'enlightened'---Peter in Russia particularly did that trying to import french palace culture

There was a department making sure it spends all of its budget so it doesn't get cut the next year angle to the liquidating of the surplus of lower level nobility. If you were caught sitting on a bunch of peasant plunder then you'd have to kick up more.

Elvis "invented" that like Columbus "discovered" America

To be fair to Elvis, he gave appropriate credit to the community and individuals he copied/took inspiration from. It's not his fault that White America ignored him when he was saying it numerous times.

bring back dandy-ism imo, men are disgusting and unhygienic these days. all sloppy poorly fitting T shirts and athletic shorts and jeans and unwashed blackened mechanic hands. people used to think women were too irrational to maintain their appearance to the standards a man could, its hilarious how its the complete opposite today, like men will look at you like you have 5 heads for saying they should consider doing something as 'unmanly' as washing yourself or caring about your appearance. they can't even bother to maintain the dishevelled mad prophet look, instead its like an especially silly midpoint between the fashion sense of a 12 year old middle schooler and a severely alcoholic trucker without access to toiletries or washing facilities (except they somehow always look like they last shaved 3 days ago, poorly)

All cis men should be requires to be part of some sort of subculture for at least 2 years so they can learn a cool look. If a Guy is Normal Type it means he's weak against Fighting Type Guys but gets half damage from Ghost Type Guys but also they only ever are around other dudes thst dress like toddlers

Good idea. Let's retroactively credit all his songs to 'Vic Fountaine', edit him out of all existing photos and execute those who dare speak his name.
