the real problem is the shitty ventilation that most basic ranges have. I don't know what your situation is, but every apartment I've ever lived in may as well have just had a speaker making a fan noise for all the good the vent did, even with windows open.

Once one of my friends at uni wanted to cook something that was naturally very smokey. We ended up sneaking into the lab and installing the stove inside the fume hood. Great times.
