My SOs cooking is amazing, but it often sets off the smoke detectors in our apartment. I have disabled most of the smoke detectors, but I don't want us to die in our sleep.

the real problem is the shitty ventilation that most basic ranges have. I don't know what your situation is, but every apartment I've ever lived in may as well have just had a speaker making a fan noise for all the good the vent did, even with windows open.

Once one of my friends at uni wanted to cook something that was naturally very smokey. We ended up sneaking into the lab and installing the stove inside the fume hood. Great times.

I broke my arm trying to disable my smoke alarm. That frozen pizza was really not worth it in retrospect, but I'm laughing now.

I use a broom stick. Also, I'm a frozen pizza connosuier. I've tried all the fancy bullshit and nothing compares to Red Baron brick oven cooked by the instructions.

Nope lol. Just keep the fan on I guess. That's what I do.

YES. There are multiple available smoke detector technologies. Most are ionization. You want photoelectric, or, even better and less sensitive, heat. And it's safe to mount them like a foot down on a wall instead of a ceiling. A real fire will produce enough smoke to hit that height.

Still remember the time the smoke detector in my old apartment started going off for no reason

Me and my SO spent an hour making sure that nothing was on fire and another five hours trying to get our landlord to give us a ladder to check out the detector (old mill conversion, very high ceilings, smoke detector was at least 12 feet off the ground)

After 8 hours or so of the damn thing going off, my SO took a broom and threw it like a javelin, smashed the fucking thing in two.

So, long story short, look for Kidde brand combination CO2 and smoke detectors because those things have been working a-ok in our house now and haven't given us a lick of trouble

I learned the AC was fucked up and causing mold growth in my old apartment because the smoke detector would go off randomly due to extremely high humidity.

box fan in the window when I know i'm gonna be generating a fair amount of smoke, pre-emptively disabling them when I know i'm gonna be generating a ton

Other folks already have good suggestions but I wanted to mention the glory of outside cooking if it's available to you (balcony or back yard). That's where the good cooking happens in lots of cultures because you can get as hot and smoky as you please. A decent induction burner + cast iron will make you a pretty sweet setup on the cheap.

Discriminating against certain air currents because they're black? I see how it is.
