Other folks already have good suggestions but I wanted to mention the glory of outside cooking if it's available to you (balcony or back yard). That's where the good cooking happens in lots of cultures because you can get as hot and smoky as you please. A decent induction burner + cast iron will make you a pretty sweet setup on the cheap.
