Starting Strength is a really good book/program for starting to build a base in weight-lifting, and is basic enough for pretty much everybody to start. It explains all of the lifts and does a good job of explaining them and coaching you through starting off. Lots of pictures and diagrams. I'd recommend it as a starting place for learning to lift and building a well-rounded base of strength.
