So I know there's no "genocide" going on, and that the facilities are there to mitigate the real threat of terrorism in China, and basically every claim Western news makes about it is some Grade-A bullshit, but...

How many people are in these facilities at a given time? My BF claims it's gotta be at least 5% and that seems hella high to me. But if I google, all I get is Zenz bullshit, or people discrediting Zenz bullshit, but no real information about how many people are actually going through the reeducation/vocational training that China is doing. Does anyone have any good sources? Particularly for someone who is critical of Western news but considers Al Jazeera and AP as the pinnacle of journalistic credibility?

It's easy to discredit bullshit, but he's really caught up on knowing the real numbers here and "all your sources are straight-up lies" isn't gonna fly here if I don't have a counter-offer.

I remember someone posted some really good translations of the 'leaked internal documents' that were apparently proof of all this.

IIRC they mentioned that the highest percentage of minorities in any given region happened to be the one with the highest population and most terrorist activity, which sat at about 10 percent of Uighurs in the region being detained. This is where the million number comes from - news articles took this number and extrapolated it across the entire Uighur population which gives about 1.2m, but this ignores the fact that this area was singled out in the documents as an outlier and the high numbers were clearly being stated as an issue.

Nothing in those documents gave total numbers, but the translation gives us a good idea of how overblown the numbers were in western media. Combined with the fact that the program might also be finished I wouldn't be surprised if they have less Muslims 'detained' there as a percentage of the population that we do here in Australia.

For Australia - 4-5% of Indigenous Australians are detained, compared to 0.2% of the general public. Out of the total number of people detained, Indigenous Australians make up 1/3 of them. Probably likely that there are regions where 10% of Indigenous Australians are detained.
