Perhaps the actual response is "I'm sorry neighbor, I'll call a tow truck myself right now and get this sorted out". It wouldn't cost more than $75 (maybe less) if they just towed the car elsewhere in the neighborhood. Instead it's "my family may be financially ruined by the consequences of my actions, but actually it should be you instead when you get fired (or at least miss hours) by not showing up to work"
