I finally added Linux mint to my desktop as a dual boot setup.

Regretfully, I still need to use Windows for some key art programs (if anyone knows how to get the latest version of Clip Studio Paint/Zbrush working lmk. I might just pirate them and see if that works better.)

The first thing I noticed is how much better the UI is. I didn't realize how invasive windows 10 was, even after I stripped Cortana/ads out. I had no idea that windows 10 was so fat and bloated until I had something better to compare it to. Now it hurts to go back.

When I'm using Linux I feel like I did when I was a kid again. My computer feels like my computer, and I have all these free tools at my fingertips. I feel relaxed and no longer bombarded by constant tooltips and notifications that treat me like I'm computer illiterate.

Blender works fantastically in it, my tablet drivers took a minute to install, but they work better than on windows.

I am now looking into switching all of my devices to Linux/Linux Dual Boot. I have a pixel4a that I'd like to switch over (what is a good rec for this?). I also have an HP spectre & a surface 6 I want to switch to, but I am VERY NERVOUS about this because IDK how well Linux handles 2in1's.

I know I'm gushing a lot, but Linux is good ok??

    Congrats!

I don't know about Clip Studio Paint/Zbrush, but the best art program on Linux is Krita. It's really promising, a lot of people love using it, and it should be available on Mint's app store. Might be worth checking out!

Pixel 4a, the phone right? Linux doesn't run on it, but CalyxOS is a really awesome, privacy-oriented operating system that you could put on it.

For a Surface 6, I know it's possible to put Linux on a Surface 3 from this post, at least

Been on Linux for 14 years now! I use mint these days as well. I occasionally try out other distros but these days I'm a bit less adventurous and just want something easy and pretty, which Mint fits the bill for quite well.

For your Pixel I don't know if I'd go the full Linux route. Been a while since I checked on the projects but many of them were still pretty wonky last time I flashed one. Probably better off with a more conventional rom. I used LineageOS on my Pixel 2 for a while and loved it. Android is basically Linux, just unfortunately functions much better with GApps installed, which kind of defeats the point.

I've never run Linux on a tablet like the Spectre or Surface, but my laptop does have a touch screen that works perfectly fine running mint. Of course the nice thing about Linux is the community is usually willing to help out/answer questions.

Anyway, welcome to Linux! Have fun and break everything.

Try wine. The wine appdb for the former suggests you'll need to install vcrun2010 (winetricks vcrun2010). The procedure for the latter is a bit more involved but nothing too complex.

Alternatively, you might consider spinning up a small windows VM in seamless mode (also, enable 3D acceleration) just for those two apps.

for pixel 4a i use and can recommend grapheneOS as a very privacy-focused and degoogleified os, that was actually really surprisingly easy to set up

    also linux good

not sure sorry, im not up on the technical stuff, it just seemed from my research that graphene was the most privacy-est

i think the difference comes down to the use of something called microg which calyx has, thats an open source thing that allows interaction with google play services i think (i dont really understand the technicalities), whereas graphene completely strips out everything related to google play so its a more complete degoogleification. but its not clear to me how much that actually matters, if at all, i just really fucking hate google and resent having to buy a google phone in order to really degoogleify so this seemed like the more spiteful option

I use Krita for my art program and it's very good. I don't know if it's better/worse than Clip Studio, I'm sure it'd be a learning curve to go from any program to another, but I swear by Krita. They're going to have a 5.0 update soon that will revamp their animation tools among other things.

I do use Krita and I'd say it's superior for painting & color editing- but it's just not there yet for inking and publishing imo. I use clip specifically for making comics and in that regard it's the best on the market.

If you can't get CPS working with Wine, I'd suggest using Medibang with it instead. Seems to be more stable from what I'm aware, and it has most of the same comic features that CPS does.

Never understood the appeal of mint but good looks regardless.

I used to take a lot of school notes with xournal and a refurbed wacom tabled and I always liked the no bullshit wacom drivers in Linux a lot more than either the windows or mac drivers.

Technically your Pixel already runs Linux lol 😂

Anyway if you want to de-Googlify your phone r/fossdroid has resources on that

literally the only thing keeping me from switching to linux is not having to run games on an emulator on windows

Good news, a ton of games work natively on Linux now. Steam is also running Linux on steam deck so the future is looking bright in that regard.

i mean tbh i could just have windows on one drive for bideo game and linux on another drive for everything else.
