Mihcailhuitl or Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a two day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (Offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed. These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebrations!
Pre-Hispanic Origins :hisssssss:
The celebration of the deceased faithful in Mexico has its origin in pre-Hispanic times. According to historians, the Mexica had various periods throughout the year to celebrate their dead, the most important of which took place at the end of the harvest, between the months of September and November.
Aztec society believed that life continued even in the afterlife, that is why it considered the existence of four "destinations" for people, according to the way they died. The archaeologist Eduardo López Moctezuma details them as follows:
-
The Tonatiuhichan or "house of the sun" was the place where warriors killed in battle, those captured for sacrifice and pregnant women went.
-
The Tlalocan, a type of paradise to which all those who died by water arrived.
-
The Chichihualcuauhco, a space destined for dead babies, there they were suckled by a huge nurse tree until they were "born again."
El Mictlán, the kingdom of the dead and the destiny of people who died from causes not related to water, war or childbirth. It was thought that, to reach this last place, the dead had to go through a long process in which they were helped by a dog ( Xoloitzcuintle ).
To arrive at Mictlán, the deceased had to wait four years, during which time he was devoured by Tlaltecuhtli, the goddess of the earth. Completed the above, a journey through the nine levels of the Mexica underworld began.
Finaly after Crossing the river Chiconahuapan, with the help of a xoloitzcuintle dog. They would reach the Itzmitlanapochcalocan, the place where the gods of death dwell. It is this last place where the deceased met Mictlantecuhtli , the god of the underworld.
Mictlantecuhtli was the owner and lord of the place of the dead, Mictlán. He was also considered the god of the underworld and ruled such a destiny together with his wife Mictlancíhuatl.
When the person was in the presence of the deity, he had to give him the offerings with which he was buried: corn grains, beans, precious stones and other vegetable products.
Within art, Mictlantecuhtli has been represented in various ways, mainly as a skeleton or man with cadaverous features, blood and even with his liver exposed. He is accompanied with various attire such as plumes, hats, necklaces, belts, and cotton textiles. One of the most popular sculptures of the god of death is in the Museo del Templo Mayor, in Mexico City.
:spain-cool: Conquista period and Catholic syncretism :chesus:
With the arrival of the Spanish, the Day of the Dead did not completely disappear, like other Mexican religious festivals. The evangelizers discovered that there was a coincidence of dates between the pre-Hispanic celebration of the dead with All Saints' Day, dedicated to the memory of the saints who died in the name of Christ.
The feast of All Saints began in Europe in the 13th century and during this date the relics of the Catholic martyrs were exhibited to be worshiped by the people.
There was also a synchronicity with the celebration of the faithful departed, held just one day after Todos Santos. It was in the fourteenth century when the Catholic hierarchy included this festival in its calendar, the purpose of which was to remember all those who died from various pandemics, such as the Black Death that ravaged Europe.
This is how the Day of the Dead was reduced to just two days, on November 1 and 2, although in other regions such as Oaxaca and Puebla it extends to several days, since it is believed that those who died of unnatural causes arrive days before to home.
The pre-Hispanic customs of cremating the dead or burying them in the home were eliminated and the corpses began to be deposited in the churches (the rich inside and the poor in the atrium). Spanish customs were adopted, such as consuming bone-shaped desserts that led to the popular pan de muerto and sugar skulls.
The custom of placing an altar with candles or tapers also began, in this way the relatives prayed for the soul of the deceased so that it would reach heaven. In the same way, the visit to cemeteries became traditional, which were created until the end of the 18th century, as a way to prevent diseases by building them on the outskirts of cities.

had both my car and my wifes car towed from our own complex last night. I was awoken by the alarms and was able to get them before they were taken 20 miles away. All for expired registration stickers despite both cars having their registration up to date, the stickers were in the mail.
Got extorted out of 300 dollars of our wedding money to get the cars back at 3Am.
I think I will become the joker.
FUCK CARS. Also it's amazing how many little scams exist in the USA to extort money from the poor, towing is one of them. It's no wonder why all wealth goes from the bottom to the top.
I was lucky that I happened to have some cash in my apartment. Without it, It would have easily been a 40 minute taxi ride or a 4 hour bus route to get to where they took the cars, I would have then had to pay even more to get them back.
I was lucky but this shit could ruin someones year and send them into a debt spiral.
Fuck tow truck companies. their drivers are working class dudes but the industry is downright evil.
For the majority of the precariat this is the case. Hell a surprise $100 fee on anything can send you plummeting to rock bottom. Healthy society that this is the predicament most people find themselves in.
That's what gets me. i've seen a mom with her three kids come out from visiting someone in my complex return to an empty spot.
It's fucking cruel. 160 bucks if you catch them, 185 if you need to go to their impound lot, plus the cost to get a taxi or get someone to get you a ride.
If you miss work that day and lose your job, you just spiral deeper and deeper. I'm lucky, i had cash from my wedding that I insisted we not spend on random things, which saved our asses because the drivers only take cash. I'm lucky I wake up to this shit. I'm lucky i can keep a sorta cool head and deal with these guys.
Our whole lives are just balancing on a fine wire, in a constant flux with the threat of falling down.
Someone posted an infographic on here a week or so back about China's social credit system and how taking hits to your credit drops you deeper and deeper into the hole. That's literally the USA, it's a series of trap doors for the poor but we pretend they do not exist.
Their drivers are working class in the same way that cops are working class. Tow truck drivers are class traitors. Fuck tow truck drivers (roam towing at least. Ones that just work for AAA and shit like that are fine)
I mean yeah fuck the tow truck drivers but I also have a hard time holding it against them. Its not like its a glamorous gig, they're out there at 3am hauling away peoples cars and probably getting threatened with violence nightly. They're far more of a working class/cog in the machine than a cop who gets a gun and a union and is invulnerable to getting into trouble.
I'm just glad the guys radio'd the other driver to bring my cars back. Hell he even bartered with me to take 20 bucks off. You just know these guys are skimming off the top and not submitting paperwork.
Its weird, i'm being extorted regardless, but would I rather that extortion money go to the guy driving the truck or the guy who opens up a predatory tow truck company.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ There are plenty of jobs they’re eligible for that don’t involve directly preying on the most vulnerable. The fact that it’s not a cushy gig condemns it further IMO, this job sucks, doesn’t pay well, and you’re STILL choosing to do this job that fucks over other working class people. How is that not being a class traitor?
I mean you're right that they're class traitors and probably shitheads, but I'm also hesitant to put them on the same level as cops uk?
Oh cops are definitely worse, but I almost feel like towing companies are a weird little privatized part of the police. They get to break the law with no consequences in order to “enforce” the law, but almost exclusively do so to the most vulnerable. Sounds like cops to me
Yeah, definitely.
I guess I'm trying to focus my rage on the petty tyrants that wrote the association rules that told the tow truck drivers to go after those cars.
If they weren't told to go after expired tags, the cars wouldn't have been towed period. The market for tow truck drivers comes from somewhere. There's a need to ensure the parking lot doesn't become a lot of abandoned cars but anything more than that becomes pointless overreach to help the tow truck companies profit and for the members of the board to feel big and mighty.

I'd imagine in any other country it probably would be illegal but it's the USA so it gets a pass.

nah it's the apartment complex not the cops. had this happen to me. they're just ghouls.

Yup. Even worse, its a condo complex and owners voted for this measure. The tow truck guys just go by sticker.
lived at an apartment building where the tow truck guys didn't but management would call them to tow people away by license plate themselves after sending you a warning to update it w/in 3 days by mail instead of like walking over and dropping it in your mailbox or putting it on your door.
I wish I got a warning. My car was my fault, I had the new stickers in my backpack every day for a month. I kept reminding myself to put em on then as soon as I'd walk out the door from work, it'd be in a memory hole.
My wifes was updated on time, in the mail, expired for 3 hours as it flipped over to November. I wonder if the rejected inspection sticker had something to do with it, despite us having 15 days to get it fixed and reinspected.
I'm going to take so much joy in jacking the car up in their new asphalt parking lot and doing a suspension job, maybe even spill some transmission fluid for good measure.
Expired tags shouldn’t even be a reason to tow someone in the first fucking place. It’s not illegal to have a car sit in the parking lot of my own home (which happens to be an apartment complex) with expired tags. It’s only illegal if I drive it. I live here, it’s my parking lot, taking my car from my property without my permission is the textbook definition of theft.
I totally agree but in the land of the free, even if you live there its still private property and they'll take advantage no matter what. They can set their little psycho libertarian rules of their own domain and fuck you over if you break them.
I'm really tempted to try to cause a ruckus in the board meetings over this.
I actually just found the text from the updated parking policy, I wonder why they changed this.
"Vehicles with expired tags/registration or no tags are prohibited from parking on the property. The length of time that your tags/registration has been expired does not matter. If you renew your tags/registration on line, you must display the valid temporary registration on the dashboard of your vehicle. If you fail to display your temporary registration, your vehicle is still subject to towing. If you have renewed your registration and fail to apply your new stickers to your license plate, your vehicle is still subject to towing. If the renewal of your tags/registration requires an appointment at the DMV and your appointment is scheduled after your tags will expire, you may contact <censored> in the Management Office regarding your situation. "
Punks....
How the hell are towing companies allowed to operate the way they do? They can tow cars illegally with no consequences. You know what it’s called if I take a car that isn’t mine and I wasn’t supposed to take? A fucking felony.
Genuinely surprised more people haven't done tow truck company adventurism.
