While the mainstream media have sought to downplay the impact of 2020 party conventions, polls showing President Donald Trump surging ahead as the Democrats held their virtual rally have them both stumped and spinning.
Serious question for someone who knows about conventions. Are they normally all about coronating personalities without substance? Or do they sometimes rally people around ideas, and an agenda? It seems really lackluster because they specifically avoided anyone who might advocate a progressive agenda.
A convention is like a school graduation. It's not meant to be the kickoff to something, it represents the conclusion of a process. The primaries are over, the loose ends have been tied off, everyone makes nice (in public), and they all go forward off to their respective roles in the general election. It's not meant to be controversial or inspiring, it's meant to be un controversial and reassuring. They just want to get it over with so they can get back to losing the general.

It reminds me of the Oscars. Lots of outfits, video clips, music and speeches. And no politics allowed.
