    It really is astounding to think that the leader of China is a party apparatchik that actually did shit. Like, he spent years in the countryside making the lives of people better. Imagine literally any Western politician from anywhere doing anything that actively helps people and then getting rewarded for doing a good job enough that they end up becoming leader of their nation. It's an entirely different paradigm from what I'm used to and I still often find it unbelievable.

      It had bad and good parts, but ultinately getting the Red Guards to touch grass cooled the CR enough to stop things spiralling apart.

        Xi was part of the "educated/priviledged urban youth sent to the countryside to do work and be re-educated by living and helping with the peasantry " policy during the CR . It was a correct in general touching grass campaign but wasnt directly about red guards ( tho a big part of them were included)
