It's unlikely that they will be able to take the easy path of merging in mainstream Lemmy's federation code. As far as I know there's nothing preventing the implementation of compatible federation besides someone (or some people) sitting down and going at it.

We could still implement ActivityPub and federate just fine. It would just be parallel development
