    Basically because it's cheaper for the US to have a buffer state occupy the vast and sparsely populated barely economical tundra than to maintain and govern the territories themselves is my pet theory. Sure there's all that colonial history and all that but that never stopped the US from just taking what they want before, and besides Canada is already several resource extraction companies dressed up to look like a vassal state to the US so they get what they want AND don't have to foot the bill
