Note from the author: I first wrote this tribute to Dashiell Hammett for Political Affairs in 2013. Today, literally thousands of books are being banned from school and public libraries by right-wing vigilante groups and Republican-dominated state governments.

A well-done article. I never knew about this writer. More research should be done on him.

I should also check out his work sometime.

    My dad watches classic movies all the time and the Maltese Falcon is one that frequently pops up. Had no idea that the author of the book that its based on was a communist.
