Back in the day, the internet and network tv would be full of ads for custom ringtones for phones. They would all offer this kind of "first 30 ringtones free" kind of thing, but you would be expected to sign up for 12 months and pay effectively hundreds for maybe 2-3 ringtones you'd ever actually use. I never knew anyone who fell for the scam, but the ads were everywhere anyone.
It seems like the internet has never really stopped doing that, they moved onto those weird browser games doing the same thing, and now avatars.
