They hired a corporation to build a gate that could let people travel between planets at hyperspeed. The corporation cut corners leading to a catastrophe where the moon blows up, heaps of people die and the Earth is rendered uninhabitable.

Is this not our future?

Definitely a much more realistic depiction of politics and poverty.
