The document marks the beginning of Sino-American relations. Official normalization of relations eventually happened in 1979 under Deng Xiaoping and Jimmy Carter. The document also included a commitment to the "withdrawal of all US forces and military installations from Taiwan."

The Shanghai Communiqué was released on the penultimate day of Nixon's visit to China.
