I really don't get the point. It's still functionally a short barreled handgun so it will suck at long range, and in close quarters that stock is just gonna get in the way.

    What am I missing here?

people do CQB with submachine guns and compact assault rifles (and marines even had to do it with full-length M16s since the USMC didn't adopt the M4 for galaxy brain reasons), so it's not going to be that bad comparatively

The idea of these conversion kits, as far as I understand it, is to slighly enhance the capability of a pistol - it can't replace a proper rifle of course, but a stock and some kind of red dot sight (a lot of other designs also have a foregrip) help a lot. Normally, to get those extra features on a pistol-caliber weapon, you'd just get a proper submachine gun, or if compactness is a concern, a machine pistol.

The conversion kit however allows you to just stick a regular pistol in it and get something like an ersatz machine pistol (in semi-auto only) - it'd probably be less effective than something purpose-built for the role (like a TMP/MP9, MP5K, or one of many other such designs), but you can use a pistol you already have (and the magazines for it) instead of having to buy a whole new gun.
