Reddit took all communities on the internet, then it put them in one place, and made it so that the population of one community could find all the other communities and participate in them, all in one place. This approach was so successful that it literally killed almost all forums on the internet as reddit consumed everything like a ravenous monster.
That is what Lemmy should be aiming to achieve with federations and the missing link is a federation-homepage with its own mixed feed made up of your subs in all members of the federation, as well as mixed feeds for popular and all as sources for "comm" discovery across the wider federation.
Another thing that should definitely be implemented is crossposting from one site to another within the federation - another important tool reddit uses for subreddit discovery that spreads users from space to space. The priority though should be a federation homepage, it's a complex task that needs thought about how algo can be fair across multiple sites with multiple populations given the limited screenspace and users that might sub to 100+ communities.
I mean, that's really what reddit is isn't it?

Turns out it's just not the default. When using the "Subcribed" option that's what you get.
The default options for Lemmy are all fucked up and unpolished everywhere.
