During the Russian civil war that followed the revolution (1918-1920), whatever area of Russia the Red Army entered, Jews were liberated from the control of the deeply anti-Semitic White Army. Lenin declared, "The Jewish bourgeoisie are our enemies not as Jews, but as bourgeoisie. The Jewish worker is our brother." Throughout the nineteen-twenties, the Soviet government genuinely attempted to treat Jews as an independent nationality with equal rights. The state financially supported a Jewish school system, a Jewish people's court, Jewish theaters, newspapers, magazines, and publishing houses---in other words, "a pro-Jewish policy unknown and hardly feasible in another country."
