I suspect people see that he's willing to fight and don't really care what he's fighting for, the mere fact that he fights (and fights dirty!) is what makes him different. Normal politicians don't seem to fight for anything and just give up whenever things become difficult or illegal 😉
I feel like this isn't the case, since some senators like Bernie Sanders are also very vocal about fighting for the rights of the common people and yet these same people are against him. Of course the difference is that Sanders doesn't make a circus-act out of his fights so he doesn't get shown on the nightly news.

But that was definitely the appeal of Sanders, though, and why I suspect he would have won in 2016. People like fighters.
