  • The current belief is that it can affect the brains of growing children, but they're not sure to what extent. In my state the legal age is 21, the same as for drinking. In adults, straight cannabis will not harm you in any way other than the usual effects of being under the influence and not always making rational choices. Worst case, you sleep it off. Do keep in mind that smoking it can slowly damage your lungs, the same as breathing any find particulates over a long period of time. I personally prefer edibles for long-term use, but the baking process does reduce the potency.

Now, like any drug, the reason you want to take it can be very important. If you need something to escape reality on a permanent basis, obviously you have a larger problem that no drug is ever going to solve. However the occasional evening can be quite entertaining, much like a trip to the water park. Other people (like myself) take it on a regular basis to help with medical problems, usually pain relief or sleep issues, where CBD is the answer rather than the THC component.

For myself, I've had sleeping problems for the past 16 years (since a bad car wreck). I worked with my doctor for awhile trying to find something that would help. The problem is, I'm a computer tech and I need my mind sharp for troubleshooting or writing code. All the prescription drugs leave your brain in a fog through much of the next day, and then what use am I? It turns out that marijuana has a fairly quick drop-off, so it can provide help through the night, and is pretty much out of my system by the time I head for work. As with anything, it takes some time to find the right dose. I take it along with other prescription medications to address different issues, but I've been getting good restful sleep for the past 9 years and feeling much more like myself again. For these purposes I highly recommend it, but talk to someone knowledgeable to guide you to the right strains and give advice on what to expect.

  • I think I get the idea. It's bleak and you feel like there's nothing you can do to change what's happening. I'm sorry you feel that way and maybe at some point things will change for the better. That's how I keep pushing forward, just looking forward to what might be in the future. During the Obama administration it felt like we were actually becoming better as a nation, more accepting of others and their differences, more willing to reach out to our neighbors. The only way I see things starting to get better again is to squash this notion that it's somehow ok to polarize the whole nation to hate each other, and maybe then we'll be able to start trying to help others again. Hope keeps us going.

  • I have to ask then, what are your feelings on Trump and Vance's comments that they want to deport everyone who isn't blatantly white, regardless of their citizenship status? I understand your frustration with the US Government, and this has been a long-standing issue across both parties to support Israel at all costs when we get pretty much nothing in return, but the Trump party is chomping at the bit to create a white nationalist country and put everyone else in internment camps. If you lose all of your rights as a citizen, how would you be of any help to the Arab and Muslim nations then?

I'm a white guy, the only way Trump's administration is going to impact me is by the massive increase in cost of everything since his only concept of an economic plan is to tariff everything, but I'm still scared of what he's threatening to do to everyone else. If we keep him out of office then maybe nothing changes or maybe we have a chance to try and fix things, and that's the best-case scenario that I can see right now.

  • When you say old gear is not cheaper... I take it you're looking for some pretty modern stuff? When I decided to get more involved in photography I picked up a Canon Ti4 used from ebay. It was about 6 years old at the time and I picked up a good one for around $250. The same thing with lenses, everything I have is from ebay and everything was relatively cheap (although I'd love to get one of those Sigma 600mm lenses, but oof!). Yeah my body is closer to 12 years old now but I still use it all the time and it's done well for me, plus the EF mounts are common as hell, and all of my lenses have image stabilization built in.

If you're having trouble getting trash photos, maybe check back with this group on what lenses match the shots you're trying to take? There's definitely some garbage lenses out there, and early-on I discovered Canon's own 300mm EF lens have two different models that look identical, but there's a huge difference in the quality between them (which is why the good one costs twice as much, even used).

One good thing about Canon is that you have Magick Lantern available. Most of us can't afford the functionality that this software provides for free! If you want to stick with Canon and get the best bang for your buck, check to see which bodies ML is compatible with to narrow down your selections. After that I would check the lens mounts to see what other mounts can be adapted to fit a body to give you the widest selection of lenses possible. This is usually a one-way street due to focal length so it might pay to choose a body with greater adaptability.

  • You've got it backwards. A firewall blocks everything, then you open up the ports you want to use. A standard config would allow everything going out, and block everything coming in (unless you initiated that connection, then it is allowed).

So the question you should be asking, is what services do you think you're going to be running on your desktop that you plan to allow anyone on the internet to get to?

  • That's such a common thing these days that I have to wonder if humans have always had this issue, or if it has anything to do with our modern lifestyles. I was going to do a sleep study at one point, but when I took their questionnaire I checked off no on everything on their list. Then I found out my insurance wouldn't even cover it, and couldn't afford to do the study anyway. Ah well, if I ever get back to a point where I'm having trouble sleeping again then I'll reconsider.

  • Another suggestion... have you considered if something in particular might be preventing you from getting good sleep? In my case, I've had restless-leg for quite awhile which was managed by doing some stretches before bed as needed. After a really car car accident, that went into overdrive, the stretches made no obvious difference and so I didn't think that was an issue any more, but apparently I was tossing and turning all night. I'd sleep for 9+ hours and wake up a zombie.

After years of this I finally talked to my doctor about it, we discussed a lot of things and I mentioned how I had previous had the problems with my leg pains at night. He decided to try treating this symptom and suddenly I started getting real sleep again. By now it has gotten so bad that if I forget to take my pills at night, my legs absolutely scream at me the moment I lay down in bed. Yeah I'll be on this med the rest of my life, but I'm getting good sleep now and feeling energetic the day.

The point is, your issue may be something you have already dismissed without realize fully how it affects you. When an unknown problem comes up, sometimes you just have to go back and reevaluate everything.

  • Unfortunately that's not true. I've been running mail servers under my domain since around 2000, almost as long as Microsoft has been running Hotmail, and I was certainly following good standards like SPF and DKIM well before they considered such a thing... and yet Microsoft is the bane of my mail server's existence. Despite no compromises resulting in spam blasts, MS still regularly shuts me out with no reason given and no hits showing on their monitors. If I can find their email address to ask what the problem is, I get a generic "your domain has been cleared" sort of reply but never any reason why they blocked me in the first place.

  • Well I did in fact read the article, and that doesn't answer my question about MASS. The new oxygen is being created from materials that are already on this planet, while some mass is slowly being lost into space. Lost mass means the planet as a whole has a lower gravitational pull. So is that cumulative mass over millions of years enough to account for the moon slowly pulling away, or is that entirely due to the moon's orbit being just slightly faster than the Earth's gravity pulls it back? Which comes back to the original question of whether the accumulation of meteor strikes makes up for the mass of oxygen being lost to space, or if the Earth actually weighs less now than it did say 100 million years ago?
