literally just looking at engagement numbers. They think they can thread a needle of characters that appeal to some imaginary group of SJWs while also to an imaginary group of reactionaries. Or they want to go the opposite route of deliberately stirring up controversy by making some of their characters "political" so the chuds get mad and the libs rush in to defend the game. They probably got a lot of players when the character Mei became a temporary symbol for lib sentiments about Hong Kong. Now they're trying to figure out how to do that with all the characters is what I'm guessing.
