Anything to challenge Minecraft is good. Mojang are such fucking bad devs it's unreal. More than a decade and all we've gotten are updates that only add decorative blocks, few actual gameplay changes or updates, obnoxious new mechanics... but the worst thing is 100% the lack of any modding API for Java. Oh, and the fact that they don't have any vertical slabs in the game because "um it limits the creativity of people!! people are more creative when they have restrictions!!"

The java edition is decompilable; the only way to improve modding at that point is to completely open source the game.

Isn't a modding API necessary for mod compatibility between versions?

Not necessarily, depends on what has changed between versions. But yes, that is why there is Forge and Fabric mod apis

I would suggest Vintage Story, a standalone game which came out of the Minecraft modding community. Unlike Minecraft, the gameplay focuses more on semi-realistic hardcore survival with far more depth when it comes to geology, AI animal behavior, and industry, in an immersive world with seasons and all. It also has light automation such as windmill-powered smithing hammers and more.

The modding ecosystem is great as it has a fully-supported API, and you can download mods as you connect to servers.

I've tried Vintage Story and there's a lot I like about it, but I absolutely cannot stand the ore prospecting part of the game.

Oh, and the fact that they don’t have any vertical slabs in the game because “um it limits the creativity of people!! people are more creative when they have restrictions!!”

Is that really the reason they're going with? There are about a thousand fucking blocks in the game that need to be removed ASAP in that case

the lack of any modding API

WTF still? I remember when they were aiming to have it by 1.0 or something
