apparently one theory is that it was intended for military police motorcyclists, so they could shoot it one-handed from the bike

As someone who is into motorcycles and firearms, you'd have to be left handed to shoot from a motorcycle with one hand. And then you're shooting left handed which means you should be shooting with the brass ejecting the other direction.
