    It's engineer brain. You become incredibly skilled in one area, conflate your ability with a universal merit/intelligence, and then convince yourself that you now have expertise in disparate fields.

      I'm not so sure. Chess is a consistently humbling game. Even at the very top level they're fighting for their W's, and they're only able to maintain that level of performance with constant practice. Not that the game's isn't full of pricks, but unless you're facing someone rated well below you it's difficult to feel smart.
