lmao
i don't follow chess outside of r/anarchychess, but from what i can tell, every chess player is an extremely normal individual
The world #1 before Bobby Fischer beat him is a staunch Russian monarchist
In 2005 Spassky signed the Letter of 5000 addressed to the Prosecutor General of Russia, along with Igor Shafarevich, Vyacheslav Klykov, Vasily Belov and other activists. The petition suggested that all religious and national Jewish organizations that functioned on the territory of Russia according to the Shulchan Aruch codes should be shut down for extremism, warning about a "hidden campaign of genocide against the Russian people and their traditional society and values".
:wut:
It's like proof that too much chess makes your brain explode or something. Carlsen is a huge cry baby, Kasparov took everything Solzhenitsyn wrote down as a gospel truth, Fisher was like a white supremacist or something crazy. The chess players aren't alright.
It's engineer brain. You become incredibly skilled in one area, conflate your ability with a universal merit/intelligence, and then convince yourself that you now have expertise in disparate fields.
I mean I guess that's professionalism brain broadly considered but fair point.
I'm not so sure. Chess is a consistently humbling game. Even at the very top level they're fighting for their W's, and they're only able to maintain that level of performance with constant practice. Not that the game's isn't full of pricks, but unless you're facing someone rated well below you it's difficult to feel smart.
is this a stereotype? that sounds miserable. glad my group isn't like this
Monopoly is a shitty board game with barely any decisions to make. You should get mad at anyone who wants to play it and play a better game instead.
not only did Kasparov take Solzhenitsyn like gospel, he also started a pro liberal democracy think tank
the conspiracy theory is called the phantom time hypothesis and it's supposedly a large chunk of the middle ages fabricated including charlemagne
I am fairly certain that Kasparov is into New Chronology or Fomenkoism , not Phatnom Time Hypothesis. Similar but different crankery.
Lol I'm somehow glad there's multiple of these crackpot alt-chronologies, the world isn't sane enough for just one of these beauties.
It's very funny that they essentially are so similar, even with near identical "motive"
The phantom time hypothesis is a historical conspiracy theory asserted by Heribert Illig. First published in 1991, it hypothesizes a conspiracy by the Holy Roman Emperor Otto III, Pope Sylvester II, and possibly the Byzantine Emperor Constantine VII,[further explanation needed] to fabricate the Anno Domini dating system retroactively, in order to place them at the special year of AD 1000, and to rewrite history[1] to legitimize Otto's claim to the Holy Roman Empire.
The [Fomenkoist] theory further proposes that world history prior to AD 1600 has been widely falsified to suit the interests of a number of different conspirators including the Vatican, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Russian House of Romanov, all working to obscure the "true" history of the world centered around a global empire called the "Russian Horde".
but the whole "Everything cool and good ever developed was actually thanks to the super Russians" aspect of Fomenkoism is :chefs-kiss:
doing cold hard statistical analysis until you have proven that Rome is actually Moscow
Kasparov was also a crybaby and tried to get some young dude (radjabov) out of a tournament because he got owned by him in one game. He also liked to slam pieces down and have a conniption if he made a mistake.
i'll always be suspicious of white people who are Really Into Chess. i played chess as a kid with my grandfather, got to highschool, tried to play chess club, and as soon as i started getting hit with "you're not even counter with the Scloflovian opening? playing against you is a waste of my time..." and everyone had the personality of Machiavellian anime villain i left the hobby forever.
Go is much more chill. Definitely some Weebs in it but its a game that takes like at minimum 90 mins for a full size game. I think the kinda patience that requires cuts down on Weirdness.
Agreed, League of Legends pros unironically seem like more mature people overall
Nah, there's no credible allegation that Hans cheated in St Louie, and Magnus is a big baby.
First he (Magnus) ducks Nepo (choosing not to defend his title because it wasn't who he preferred is 100pct bush-league) then faces Hans (if he was concerned about Hans's prior online, not otb cheating (in casual games), surely this would've be expressed prior to playing, yes?) loses, gets taunted by Hans, and quits the round robin or w/e in nearly unprecedented fashion, ruining the tournament, subtweets him (Hans) like a total baby, doesn't voice any allegation, and let's Hans get pilloried w/ out addressing anything. Now this horseshit.
His behavior speaks for it's self. Baby.
Is this one of those things where you open with a move, named something like The Frenchman's Cumshot, and then you're guaranteed to lose in 87 turns or whatever
not nearly racist enough. the opening needs to convey colonialism but with feeling
We're in the opening stage now and oh my god Eugen Himmleracci has opened with the Golliwog Defense
The Belgian Enlightenment of the Darkest Continent via the King's Rook, what a classical play we're witnessing here
no, he's pissed that his anal bead supercomputers aren't working anymore
no this is an extremely common opening. He thinks Hans cheated against him over the board and is mad about it i guess.
Chess having it's own energetic sports announcers doing a live play-by-play is very funny to me.
it's the ultimate sport. combat between two gangly nerds interspersed with chess between two concussion patients.
I'm guessing the recent trend in IM and GM twitch streamers increased the number of people who both understood the game and are entertaining communicators.
There's been live commentators for chess for longer than there's been live media. It's just that chess had always been Your Dad's game so it was thoroughly unsexy. With chess getting popular on streaming platforms (mostly because most high level chess players don't make much money playing chess, but make a lot of money streaming) there's a lot more hype and personality to it beyond "wow you play chess you must be IQ".
Honestly though, it's a board game.
Every time you lose a piece, you play a round of Russian roulette. The games are very short and exciting.
Has he ever been photographed wearing a sub day necklace?
Nakamura just immediately going silent with a "you are the dumbest motherfucker of all time" expression on his face is pure :michael-laugh:
Yes, 6 moves, using the fastest way to checkmate by moving his queen right across the board and trapping the king
Absolute galaxy-brained play. One of the all-time best clips from the Chess-era of Twitch.
Don't know much about Hans but I've always hated Magnus. Seeing him throw hissy fits over losing is :chefs-kiss:
Yea but afaik there’s still zero proof he cheated in the game against Magnus.
Reminds me of when snooker players get tilted in the most polite way possible and the crowd gasps and they get ejected lol
tfw Hakuho pumps his fist in his final win ever and gets reprimanded by the Japanese Sumo association
(watch this for one of the most goated staredowns)
:farquaad-point: fucking shitface ass "best ever" chess motherfucker upset someone is close to as good as him.
1 game. he lost 1 fucking game. every other fucking sport on earth doesn't give a fuck about a slip-up.
no-ones 100% 24/7 but this motherfucker is determined to rage his way to ??? proving he's perfect under all circumstances? he isnt.
awful sport, who'd want to play with a fucker like this
it was an in person, filmed match no-ones been able to broach a reasonable theory about despite like months? of Magnus supporters malding over it
fame and prestige ruins peoples brains, a mf who was reasonable and respectful in the past shouldnt be expected to remain so after entering the limelight.
time means nothing to me :sicko-pig:
least not regarding sports no-one i know irl cares about lol
It's the only really plausible theory that doesn't conflict with things like broadcast delays and other anti-cheating measures, but its also debatable as to what degree of cheating it is.
Though it would probably still be against the rules cause theres a blanket rule you can't take actions that bring the game of chess into disrepute, which exploiting other players leaked personal preparations would definitely fall under.
We need a Chess 2, I vote for Boxing Chess. Lets see how well you can memorize movesets when you also have to hit the gym and avoid getting hit in the face.
i dont understand how that would even not be a case of being outplayed. "oh no, my opponent is countering my moves!" doesn't change strategies or modify my plan in any way
and all these dudes memorise move-sets its absurd for that to only count when your opponent uses the one youve studied
He voluntarily appeared on the Lex Friedman podcast. I bet most people are unaware of that.
Eh, it's not like he's used to winning every match, the other top players are pretty close to being as good as he is, and he has also lost to much worse players before. Something about this loss has in particular has him really triggered for whatever reason
Or maybe the top chess players inevitable turn into weird cranks at some point. Fischer became an insane anti-semite and Kasparov leads some radical centrist NGO and apparently believes in some weird conspiracy theory about antiquity not being real or something
fame, its pure :brainworms:
but more than usual, chess is an elite Brain Sport so chess folk are fooled into thinkin theyre inherently Very Smart people.
no, actually being good at a board game does not impart knowledge and wisdom for any other subject, but dont let a chess dude hear that after centuries of hype for their skillset lol
and apparently believes in some weird conspiracy theory about antiquity not being real or something
We love our Fomenkoism , don't we folks?
Hans is absolutely not close to as good as him.
I think magnus is pissed because of what Hans said in his interview after that game, that magnus must feel bad to lose to an idiot like him. Also he is probably convinced he cheated but can't prove it.
anyone qualifying for a tournament like that could beat the shit outta 90+% of chess players, i dont think its very fair to act like hans wouldn't be qualified for an unlikely victory.
Yeah most gms who analyzed the game said Magnus just played worse than he normally does. I do think his interviews were weird though but obviously not proof of cheating. I don't really know what to think about this situation other then that I want more drama. I wouldn't be surprised if Hans did cheat or if he didn't
I was going to say that this is like Ronnie O'Sullivan losing a match and cracking someone in the head with his cue in response, but then I read that he literally assaulted a press officer during a tournament lmao
It got everyone to talk about chess again. That's pretty positive, no matter how you look at it.
It could all be kayfabe. Or if it's not, it should be.
Some ChessHead (read: BIG NERD) is gonna have to explain this to me.
Oh sorry I was very unclear. I'm mostly wondering what was up with the first move was it the computationally perfect counter to The Dutchman's Clog Gambit or something?
I believe it's just that this particular tournament requires you to actually start the game before forfeiting individual matches, so he plays one move and quits.
Oh nice so it's just pure baby time. I love that drama pump it straight into my veins. Thanks for the explanation!
