Some users have spotted a weird change in their YouTube apps: Google now allows high-res streaming only for those subscribed to YouTube Premium, leaving only 1440p and lower available for free.
I remember when there was a big push for net neutrality, and even though it got dismantled by Ajit Pai as far as I can tell there has not been direct inroads yet on trying to carve up the internet.
The reason? They don't need to. They have everyone already corralled into a handful of media sources. All they need to do is to slap subscriptions on them and stomp out any competition that would offer an alternative.
The final step could be to bundle up and section off parts of the internet at the provider level, but from the looks of things currently it won't be necessary. Maybe there is a chance for the internet to flourish as a smaller community outside the realm of any mega service, but that is as long as its small enough that the bottom line isn't affected. In the long run though I imagine everything will get ruined because it is the new plundering ground for capitalism.
