Reminder that the vast overwhelming majority of content out there outside of some vary rare exceptions isn't even produced at 4k. Even if it's "shot" at 4k, all the Disney/Marvel slop is downscaled to 2k for the vfx pipeline and then digitally upscaled to 4k using AI algorithms (if even that).

4k as a resolution has its place in some gaming situations like VR but the difference between 2k and 4k resolution video is incredibly negligible even if you're talking about a 65 inch screen that you're sitting couch distance from...let alone on a 28 inch monitor in a browser window.

The main benefit of the 4k format has been the color fidelity, black levels, and more advanced codecs...none of which require a 4k sized image. 4k as a resolution is nothing but a multi pronged conspiracy to charge unnecessary premiums and eat more into your datacaps.

I have never streamed a whole video in 4K and I am not about to.

    720p? Good enough for me.

I remember when there was a big push for net neutrality, and even though it got dismantled by Ajit Pai as far as I can tell there has not been direct inroads yet on trying to carve up the internet.

The reason? They don't need to. They have everyone already corralled into a handful of media sources. All they need to do is to slap subscriptions on them and stomp out any competition that would offer an alternative.

The final step could be to bundle up and section off parts of the internet at the provider level, but from the looks of things currently it won't be necessary. Maybe there is a chance for the internet to flourish as a smaller community outside the realm of any mega service, but that is as long as its small enough that the bottom line isn't affected. In the long run though I imagine everything will get ruined because it is the new plundering ground for capitalism.

I can't think of any way the internet has gotten better in the past decade. Every corner of it is monetized. Every seemingly interesting thing is just a desperate scrap for ad revenue or data gathering. I remember when youtube was good.
