Most things integrated into Minecraft's main line used to be mods, these days. Like how the apiary mod which added bees as passively existing items was usurped by vanilla bees as mobs you can watch collecting nectar.

I thought breeding rare bees was made obsolete by those darn magical resource crops
Vanilla bees do significantly less than apiary mods though.
