AFAIK the ML understanding of the State is that it's not the same thing as the government, although the government is a major feature of the State in most of the world. I would elaborate but sadly I'm a lib and haven't actually read State and Revolution.
Either way, I think we should read anarchists if we want to understand the state, not just MLs.
