I just saw that Jamie from The Antifada is doing a new podcast called "Everybody Loves Communism". I have a lot in my podcatcher queue already, so I was wondering if anyone else had tried it, before I take the time to listen to it.
I stopped listening to The Antifada a while back when she was still on it, after the leftcom stuff started to be too much for me, which is why I even ask lol.
No, I didn't know it existed but I'll give it a go. I always liked Jamie when I listened to the Antifada and was extremely soured on the Majority Report based on how those libs (except :michael-laugh:) treated her.
Fuck Sam Seder in particular. The level of sexism he'd throw at her any time she dared disagree with him (on the same side!) was absolutely disgusting. He treats libertarians arguing about consent laws with more respect.
The tells were there with Michael too; Sam would start seething and Michael had to power through it with good humor until Sam remembered Michael was his friend. It seemed like a cute dynamic, but with time and context it feels pretty toxic.
It took me a while to notice as I was never a regular listener/viewer, but had gotten a few normie lib people to use it and Democracy Now as slightly better alternative to their diets of NPR or BBC News radio (on each side of the Atlantic respectively) so dipped in and out. But yeah, by the time I could identify who was talking without looking I was finding it pretty gross.
Yeah I liked her as well, I only just even learned that she wasn't on Antifada anymore, which is also where I saw this new podcast. I just wasn't too interested if it was more leftcom stuff lol. I never listened to the Majority Report, but some of that treatment definitely came through in episodes of Antifada where she talked about it.
Please report back your impression though!
Yeah, the deep leftcom stuff often had me skipping through or just taking a break for a while. There was definitely periods where I was basically tuning in to listen to Jamie talk about organising vaguely lefty goth parties more than for the politics. It was very much a 'background while I'm working' sort of pod for me and I stopped before she even left I think.
Same here pretty much. Once I got down to only listening to a few episodes here and there, I just unsubscribed. At the point I stopped, I think it was after they had switched to alternating episodes, but I may be misremembering that
Is this the podcast that Aaron from the Trillbillies is on? Haven't listened, but if it is that one, I was interested.
I've listened to a few episodes (the one about Dune, and the recent two-parter about Brasil). It's pretty good, not the same dynamic as The Antifada but they seem to know what they're talking about.
I’ve listened to a few episodes (the one about Dune
:party-sicko:
How was the dune ep, this is of critical importance
It was pretty good, iirc they talked about the author's weird orientalism
I'll definitely give it a listen in that case. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my time, if she had gone in a weirder direction or something lol
It is thoroughly all right. I listened to most of it when it started and have dipped in a couple times since. Sometimes it was apparent that they were still finding their rhythm as hosts, which is to be expected. I haven't listened to the most recent ones, so I assume that that has gotten better.
The show is mostly "vegetables" as in they read and talk about theory and history. I know they've gone through the Paris Commune, State and Revolution, Critique of the Gotha Program, and I think another one of Marx's works early on. Not sure where it's at now.
(Also the antifada fucks, don't @me)
Nice, I'll slot it into my queue. I'm always happy to listen to that kind of podcast, I have enough podcasts that are 100% fluff (chapo for example lol) that I can mix in some more substantive stuff.
I really enjoyed the podcast while I was still finding my footing with being a leftist. But once I was more established specifically as an ML, I still liked probably 98% of the podcast, but that 2% was grating enough that I found myself skipping over it a lot, and eventually I just unsubscribed so it wouldn't be taking up space. Pretty similar story as with Behind the Bastards for me too, except that one was more abrupt, I stopped in the middle of an episode lol
i like the antifada in it's current iteration. really good episode recently with brett from revleft on it that had some good ML-leftcom synthesis. found out ap andy is pretty much a "centrist" marxist not really leftcom and grooved with it
Between Pod Damn, Rev Left, Trash Future, and the odd-MC rant on Chapo, my hunger for leftist discourse is pretty sated.
That said, I do love myself some Jamie. I might have to give it a shot.
