A neurodivergent person posted in my local community group that they desperately needed food, and even posted a picture of an empty fridge with nothing but a tub of butter and some baking soda in it. There were plenty of people posting links to outreaches that could help, but there were also a few 50-65 year old white dudes saying, "Everywhere is hiring! How about you fill out some job applications instead of asking for handouts?"
I called one of the dudes out and told him that even if they got hired tomorrow, that won't put food in their fridge today. He said, "if they had been working, their fridge wouldn't be empty," and proceeded to call me a clueless millennial.
What the fuck do we do with these people? I hate sharing a world with fucks like these that don't carry a shred of empathy.
Neoliberalism has been incredibly effective at training people to be enormous pieces of shit. I hope it's ability to indoctrinate has eroded over time, but I guess we won't know for a while.
I feel like empathy and ethics should be taught in school. Like, as a major focus over everything else.

My high school taught "character." A whole six weeks of "Don't cheat, kids!" Today they'd probably add a whole module on "Don't ask for handouts!"
