          Yes, it depends on what kind of transformer you're using. The neon sign transformers are much safer to use than the microwave units that people salvage. Everytime you read an article about someone dying it's because they were using one from a microwave. I don't remember what the specifics are but it's a difference in voltage I think, I've been grazed by one of the leads and it just kind of wakes you up.

        The ones that kill people are salvaged from microwaves. Neon sign transformers will make sure you're awake if you get zapped by them but you'd probably have to hold onto them in each hand and make a closed circuit for it to do damage. The patterning is much more intricate too, you don't get that fine branching filigree with the microwave transformers, takes a lot longer to burn but it's fun to watch
